Biography

Faye writes the kind of stories that give her the strength and courage she needs in life. You can expect dark themes, high stakes, true love, and fierce heroines who struggle through their broken pasts to find human connection and salvation. Her works are best described as dark fantasy with strong romantic subplots featuring non-human characters with entirely human feelings and weaknesses.

She shares her writing space with a wildly supportive husband who regularly leaves her ‘cofferings’, three tiny humans who provide just the right amount of distraction, and a former Egyptian street cat who warms her lap to the purrfect writing temperature.

When she’s not writing, you can find her traversing the outdoors and photographing everyday moments, changing her perspective and finding the hidden beauty in life.

Questions

Why did you decide to write dark fantasy?

I think we write what we enjoy. These are the types of books that have always grabbed a hold of me, and so they are the ones I write because they’ll keep my interest long enough to get the story on the page.

What do you like the most about writing?

I like knowing the story isn’t just for me. That I can bring other people into my worlds by having them read my books.

What advice will you give to a new author?

Keep the momentum going. Editing is like writing the book all over again. Anything you think is rough while you’re writing it will be revisited a hundred times. Fear holds us all back. Try things out. See what works. You’re not releasing it into the wild as a first draft.

Which struggles did you meet when you wrote your first book?

One big thing I struggled with was the desire to share with everyone right away before it was ready. As creatives, sharing is a big part of why we do what we do, and resisting that urge was a challenge. In Stephen King’s writing book, he talks about keeping a story just for you until it’s ready, and I’ve come to believe strongly in that. It exists for me until I’ve spent the time getting it right. That’s not to say you can’t share snippets and talk about the book on social media. You can and probably should.

Other than the need to share, I think my biggest struggle was working through the emotions of writing out a story that had been with me for a very long time. I had a lot of fears associated with the story of my heart being something anyone would want to read, and sometimes that made it feel like I was typing with razorblades under my fingers. Pressing through it, and reminding yourself how much I love the story is what allowed me to finish. As a writer, you’re also your story’s first reader. If you truly love it, chances are at least some others will too.

Do you listen to music when you are writing? If yes, do you have a special song?

I really don’t. I’d love to say I have a cool playlist of music that sets the tone for writing, but the truth is I listen to white noise. Anything with lyrics or sometimes even classical music with a rhythm distracts me. I need my whole auditory loop to focus on writing.

What are your future projects?

Right now, I’m focused on completing my current series, Breeders. There will be five books in the series, and I’m currently working on number three. I took a break from Breeders last year to work on my first manuscript and release it in two books (Ancients and Coming Home), and I have a number of Breeder readers who regularly message me asking after book three. My intention was to work on editing these drafts while writing the next Breeders book, but I ended up struggling to shift between the two worlds, and it was a mess. I’ve learned I need to move through one series at a time. It’s frustrating, but necessary.

Once I’m done the Breeders series, I plan to return to my other actively releasing series (Bloodcharm). After that next book is out (title is Lost and Found), I have a dark fantasy I’ve been pining over. It’s drafted and sitting on my digital shelf until I can get to it, and it’s fabulously dark, gritty, spicy. I’m an old school fantasy reader and want to work on the worldbuilding, so no it’s not finished. The book is titled, ‘When the Stars Whisper,’ has a cover, and is basically sitting there taunting me. Lion shifters rule the world as they have been set to be rulers by the stars the people worship who spoke to the people and decreed a lion shifter must rule the kingdom.

The fmc is a female lion shifter in the king’s harem who was raised to serve the crown, and who realizes no one is willing to save her from the king’s abuses. She seeks a challenger to the crown in the form of a traveling musician who is forced to obscure his identity.

and because I’m a sharer, here’s the cover. P.S. I make my own covers, and this remains one of my favourites.

Thanks at the author for sharing this amazing cover
