A serial
killer…
A past that haunts no matter how much the distance…
Which one will strike first?
Eighteen deaths over eight years has left Shane Peters itching to find his
mark. The death that started it all ensured his obsession with the murderer who
had turned his life into a living hell, leaving him to raise a newborn daughter
on his own.
Starting over wasn’t the easiest thing, but Emberlyn Roth had managed by shear
grit and the skin of her teeth. It’s too bad one can’t outrun their past.
A protector of the wronged, Shane is torn between his duty as a detective for
the Jacksonville PD and a quest to find himself some peace. Red tape binds his
capabilities and moonlighting as an investigator for Nightshade Securities has
him feeling stretched thin. Late nights on the streets and his sense of duty
keeps him from being the father he wants to be. Throw onto his already rickety
house of cards, an attraction to the mysterious Emberlyn, the lead he’s got on
the murderer he’s been hunting for nearly a decade, and threats his woman is
receiving by an unsavory character from her past, and he’s seriously tempted to
take Dalton Kipper’s offer to join his team in a permanent basis.
Rules have a place, but when you’re faced with losing the one that means most
to you, lines can become blurred. With the fate of his family’s future hanging
in the balance, he’s ready to risk it all.
My
review
It’s the
second book from a 4 books series. You don’t have the first book because the
story is independent, but the protagonists are coming back. I recommend to read
the first book to understand the universe, but I had to admit I have a
preference for this one. Someone is after Emberlyn and it kept me hooked until
I reach the last page.
Shane is a
little overprotective, but he is my favorite character. He made my heart melt a
few times. I am not sure I want my future boyfriend to be protective like him,
but I like to find man like him in novels. I also liked Ember. She is a secret
woman, a little like me, but it’s because she keeps a secret. I will let you
discover by reading the book. I promise the author choose an important subject
and I wish people talked more about it especially for women.
Lana Rose
is the cutest little girl and I think the reader will love her as much as I
did. She is a secondary character, but she is the one that won my heart. She is
Shane’s daughter and I think his relationship with Ember would not be the same
without his little one.
If you like
romance, I recommend it. I had a great time while I reading it.
Excerpt
" Mom, I don’t to talk about this. I date, and that’s
enough for me right now, but what I’m telling you is that I will find my own
dates, on my own time, at the own convenience. Drop the matchmaking act. "
(p.22)
" A fucking
fractured toe " I grumbled as Shane got into the driver’s seat. " How
many does someone stub their big toe in a lifetime, and I have to be the one to
end up the gimp? " (p.64)
" I miss cuddling
in front of the TV, quiet nights in, good conversations…good company. I miss
having someone for myself that gives a damn about more that just themselves.
Someone that can challenge me. " (p.68)
" I told you that
I didn’t want to put your mother and daughter in danger. The same goes for you,
Shane. It’s why I didn’t want to come here. It’s why I’m not going to Dalton
and Devolin’s either. " (p.109)
