Essence Derived – Essence extracted book 1 by Carey Decevito

80 pages

Back Cover

Many things in this world cannot be explained: the birth of the cosmos for example—does a higher power really exist—or what about magical and mythical creatures of the paranormal?

Payton knows this better than anyone, even though she could probably give a few of those answers.

When this empath’s world shifts on its axis, she discovers life as she knows it is much more convoluted—it’s a dark and dangerous place. One filled with things that go bump in the night, causing death and chaos, which may mean the end of her kind.

Despite the numerous warnings from her parents, she never once believed them about the dangers lurking about, until one brutal night when they were taken from her before her very eyes.

She sees her gifts as a curse—ones that would ultimately lead to her demise—but when a mere stranger interrupts her life by knocking her feet out from under her, Payton soon discovers she has a purpose to serve.

A mission: one a lot more complex than she could ever imagine.

But could she do it matched?

And what the hell did that even mean?

My review

First, I would thank the author for letting me review this book. I already read her complete series The Broken Men Chronicles and I wanted to read the rest of her books. I will recommend this one, if you like short stories. It’s only 80 pages with a mixt of suspense and romance. It only took me a few hours to read it and you will also find excerpts for her two other series. It’s the perfect book to know more about her writing.

The author surprise me at the end, I did not know that Payton was hiding something from the beginning, just for this reason it’s worth reading it. It’s a two voices novel and you will also know who is the watcher. The mystery is revealed in the middle of the story.  Her two other series are not paranormal, so I appreciate to try something new. I am not used to this genre.

I am used to read 300 pages and more novels, but it was nice to read something short and sweet for once. Even though, you need to concentrate to understand certain parts. I will also recommend it for someone who want to learn English.

Excerpt

After a quick stop in a stall and handwashing, I had managed to cool myself down from the projected emotions of those unnamed faces out in the crowd. Weaving though the masses, overwhelming lust radiated toward me. (p.30)
