Interview with Zoe York

Biography

Zoe York is a thirteen-time USA Today bestselling author of contemporary romance, often with military heroes, and always with scorching heat between the pages. Between her two pen names (she also writes erotic romance as USA Today bestselling author Ainsley Booth), she has published more than fifty books since her debut in 2013 with What Once Was Perfect. Notable hits include Prime Minister (USA Today bestseller twice, in 2016 and 2017), the SEALs of Summer anthologies (NYT bestsellers in 2014 and 2015), and the fan-favourite Canadian small town series, Pine Harbour and Wardham.

She lives in London, Ontario with her young family, and is currently chugging Americanos, wiping sticky fingers, and dreaming of heroes in and out of uniform.

Questions

Which of your novels do you recommend to a new reader and why?

Love in a Small Town is the first book in the Pine Harbour series, so it’s a good place to start! But some readers find me because they like military romance, and for those readers, Love in a Sandstorm might be the best one to start with. Each of my books are about a different couple, so there’s no wrong place to start. What Once Was Perfect is the first book I ever published, so that has nostalgic appeal. And for those who really love a Navy SEAL hero, my upcoming A Navy SEAL for Christmas is another great choice.

Why did you decide to write romance instead of another genre?

It’s what I read most of the time! I love romances, so it was an easy choice to try my hand at writing.

Music takes an important place in Love on the run, do you listen to music when you write?

I love to listen to music while writing. I listen to the same songs on repeat for much of the same book, because they keep me in a certain mood that I connect to that character. For Love on the Run, those songs were Tin Star by Lindi Ortega, We Can’t Be Friends (the YouTube version by Shelley Skidmore, who performed it at the Grand Ole Opry—I saw this live, while on a research trip for the book) and Stay a Little Longer by Brothers Osborne.

What are your inspirations?

Bruce County, which is the real life location inspiration for Pine Harbour. It’s where I grew up. I have a lot of respect for first responders, especially paramedics and firefighters, so real life stories about those professions often inspire story ideas.

Do you read other genres than romance?

I also read mystery and science fiction! And I love historical non-fiction, too. I’m currently listening to The Duchess Countess by Catherine Ostler in audio.

What advice would you give to a new author?

Polished books take multiple passes; some people call these drafts, other people revise heavily as they write, and then go straight into edits. And there are a dozen different names for the different editing passes. But the short version of this truth is: nobody sits down and writes a masterpiece. Don’t compare your work in progress to someone else’s finished product without understanding all the steps they went through to get that book done!

What are your next projects?

I’m currently writing Wild at Heart, which is another Pine Harbour novel. It’s the third book in a new series, called The Kincaids of Pine Harbour. It will release on September 28, 2021. And then I have a standalone SEAL book coming out in October (A Navy SEAL for Christmas).
